When Do You Need to Cite? Common Knowledge Explained

Learn the three-part test for common knowledge and when a claim needs a citation, with a working example table for research papers.

Halfway through a psychology paper, you type “the human brain contains roughly 86 billion neurons” and freeze. Does that need a citation? You didn’t discover it yourself, but it also feels like the kind of fact you’d find in a textbook without a source attached. Multiply that hesitation across every sentence of a ten-page paper and citation decisions start eating more time than the actual writing. There’s a real test behind that hesitation, and once you know it, most of these judgment calls stop being guesswork.

What Common Knowledge Actually Means

A claim qualifies as common knowledge when it meets three conditions at once: a general audience would already know it or accept it without proof, you can find it stated the same way in multiple general reference sources without any of them citing an origin, and it isn’t the specific finding, interpretation, or argument of one researcher or study. “World War II ended in 1945” passes all three tests. “Early exposure to a second language improves executive function scores by 12% in longitudinal studies” fails the third test immediately – that’s a specific research finding tied to a specific body of work, not a fact the world already agreed on.

The distinction that trips people up is between a fact being true and well established and a fact being common knowledge. Plenty of well-established scientific facts still need citations, because the “well established” part came from research that someone did and published, and readers deserve to know whose work backs the claim.

Common Knowledge Is Field-Dependent

The three-part test shifts depending on your audience. A claim that’s common knowledge to a biology major – say, that DNA is composed of four nucleotide bases – might need a citation in a paper written for a general-education composition class, where the reader can’t be assumed to know it already. The reverse also happens: a claim considered common knowledge within a specific academic discourse (a well-known court ruling in a law paper, a foundational theorem in a math paper) can go uncited among a specialist audience even though it would need a source in a general-audience piece.

When you’re not sure who your actual reader is – a professor grading a hundred similar papers, most likely – default to the stricter standard. It costs you very little to add a citation a specialist reader wouldn’t have needed. It costs a great deal to omit one a stricter grader expected.

Three Categories to Test Every Claim Against

Run each sentence through these three buckets before you decide:

Undisputed general facts. Geography, historical dates everyone agrees on, basic definitions found identically across dictionaries and encyclopedias. No citation needed. “The Pacific is the largest ocean on Earth” doesn’t require a source.

Specific data, statistics, and findings. Any number, percentage, or measured result that came from a particular study, survey, or dataset always needs a citation, no matter how widely it’s been repeated online. If a statistic has a decimal point or a sample size behind it, someone produced that number through research – credit them.

Interpretations, arguments, and analysis. Any claim that represents someone’s conclusion, opinion, or original framing needs a citation, even if you personally agree with it and even if it’s paraphrased rather than quoted directly. Interpretation is intellectual property in an academic sense; the idea belongs to whoever first argued it.

The Three-Source Rule

A practical test when you’re stuck: search for the claim in three independent general reference sources – an encyclopedia, a reputable news outlet, a textbook. If all three state it plainly as background fact without citing where it came from, it’s very likely common knowledge in the context you’re using it. If even one of those three sources attributes the claim to a specific researcher, study, or report, treat it as a claim that needs its own citation, not common knowledge.

This test works because reference sources are conservative about attribution – they cite things precisely when the underlying claim is contestable, recent, or tied to specific research rather than settled fact.

When In Doubt, Cite

The two outcomes of a wrong guess aren’t symmetric. Citing something that turns out to be genuine common knowledge costs your reader a fraction of a second and makes your paper look slightly more careful than strictly necessary. Failing to cite something that turns out to need attribution risks a plagiarism flag, a grade penalty, or – in the worst case – an academic integrity hearing. Given that asymmetry, the rational default when you’re genuinely unsure is to add the citation.

How This Interacts with Paraphrasing

Rewriting a source’s finding in your own words doesn’t move it into common-knowledge territory – the idea still originated somewhere, and paraphrasing changes the wording, not the ownership of the idea. Students sometimes assume that once they’ve reworded a claim enough times across drafts, it starts to feel like their own general knowledge, but a grader reading your paper for the first time doesn’t share that context. If you can point to the specific source where you learned a claim, cite it, whether you’re quoting it directly or restating it entirely in your own sentence structure. Common Mistakes

  1. Over-citing truly universal facts. Citing a source for “the Earth orbits the Sun” clutters your paper and signals you haven’t internalized the common-knowledge test.
  2. Using personal familiarity as the standard. A fact feeling obvious to you after weeks of research on a topic doesn’t make it common knowledge to your reader – judge it against a general audience, not your own accumulated expertise.
  3. Assuming a statistic is safe once it’s repeated everywhere online. Wide repetition doesn’t erase the original research behind a number; find and cite the actual source, not the blog post that repeated it.
  4. Treating field-specific knowledge as universal. What’s common knowledge in your major isn’t automatically common knowledge to your grader or a general-education reader.
