What CiteTools is

CiteTools is a free citation converter. Paste a DOI, ISBN, URL, BibTeX entry, or a messy reference, and it returns a properly formatted citation in APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, or Vancouver style. There's no sign-up and no paywall.

What it does

• Converts between 6 citation styles: APA (7th edition), MLA (9th edition), Chicago (18th edition, notes and bibliography), Harvard (Cite Them Right 12th Edition (Legacy)), IEEE, and Vancouver.
• Accepts a DOI, ISBN, URL, BibTeX entry, or a formatted or plain-text reference as input, and detects which one you've pasted.
• Outputs citations as plain text, HTML, or BibTeX, and can export a full reference list as a Word document, Rich Text file, LaTeX, or PDF.
• Supports batch conversion, so you can format a full reference list in one pass instead of one citation at a time.

How it verifies data

When you paste a DOI or a PubMed ID, CiteTools looks up the source against CrossRef, DOI.org, and PubMed to confirm details like the title, authors, publication date, and journal before formatting the citation. If a lookup fails or the input doesn't match a known identifier, CiteTools falls back to parsing what you pasted directly - always double-check the result against the original source before you submit your work.
