How to Cite Social Media Posts in APA, MLA, and Chicago | CiteTools

Social media posts show up in academic work more than you might expect. Political scientists cite tweets from elected officials. Communications researchers analyze Instagram campaigns. Sociologists reference Reddit discussions. If you're using social media as a primary source, you need to cite it properly.

The challenge is that social media doesn't fit neatly into traditional citation categories. Posts disappear, usernames don't match real names, and the "title" of a post is often the post itself. Each major style guide has adapted its rules to handle these cases, but the details differ significantly.

Before diving into specific formats, keep these principles in mind:

Use the real name when available. If a user's profile shows their full name, cite that. Use the handle/username as a supplement, not a replacement.
Quote short posts in full. For tweets and short posts, include the full text as the title (up to about 20 words in APA).
Include the date and time when possible. Social media is time-sensitive, and a post's date can matter for context.
Archive ephemeral content. Posts can be deleted or accounts deactivated. Take screenshots or use the Wayback Machine as a backup. More on this below.

Twitter/X Posts

Twitter (now X) is the most commonly cited social media platform in academic writing.

Key rules:

List the real name first, then the handle in square brackets
Italicize the first 20 words of the tweet as the title
Include Tweet as the format descriptor
End with the direct URL to the tweet

When the author uses only a handle (no real name available):

@ScienceDaily. (2025, March 22). New study reveals high-altitude microplastics are reaching the Arctic through atmospheric transport pathways Tweet. Twitter. https://twitter.com/ScienceDaily/status/9876543210

MLA 9th Edition

Key rules:

Real name first, handle in brackets
Full text of the tweet in quotation marks (if short enough)
Platform name italicized as the container
Date in MLA day-month-year format

Chicago 17th Edition

Chicago generally recommends citing social media posts in footnotes or text only, not in the bibliography. However, if you reference them frequently, a bibliography entry is acceptable.

Instagram Posts

Instagram citations follow a similar pattern but include the photo or video description as the title.

Facebook posts are cited similarly, but you may encounter privacy issues -- only cite public posts.

If the account uses an organizational name (no handle), just use the name

Reddit Posts and Comments

Reddit is increasingly cited in research, especially in social science, technology, and health studies. The unusual element here is pseudonymity -- Reddit users rarely use real names.

TikTok Videos

TikTok is newer to academic citation, but its cultural influence makes it relevant in media studies, marketing research, and sociology.

Handling Disappearing Content

Social media posts can be deleted, accounts can be suspended, and platforms can shut down entirely. This creates a unique problem for academic citations: your source might not exist by the time someone reads your paper.

Best practices:

Take a screenshot of the post with the date and URL visible. Include it as a figure or appendix if your instructor allows it.
Use the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) to archive the page. Some researchers archive every social media source they cite.
Save the permalink. Always link to the specific post, not the user's profile or a search result.
Note the access date if the content is likely to change. While APA 7th doesn't normally require access dates, social media is an exception worth noting.

If a post has already been deleted and you're citing it from a screenshot or archive, mention this in your text:

"In a since-deleted tweet, Senator Doe stated that..." (screenshot archived by author).

Pseudonyms and Privacy

Social media handles raise ethical and practical questions:

Public figures and organizations: Cite freely using their real name and handle.
Pseudonymous users: Use their username. Do not attempt to identify them if they haven't disclosed their real name.
Private accounts: Generally do not cite private social media posts. If your research requires it, consult your IRB or ethics board.
Sensitive content: If citing someone's post could put them at risk (e.g., a Reddit post about mental health), consider paraphrasing without linking directly to their profile.

Common Mistakes

Citing the platform instead of the post. Your citation should point to the specific post, not twitter.com or instagram.com.
Using only the handle when the real name is available. Always check the profile for a real name first.
Forgetting the format descriptor in APA. The Tweet, Photograph, or Video label is required.
Citing private or group content without permission. Only cite publicly accessible posts.
Omitting the date. Social media dates are easy to find and always relevant.
Not archiving ephemeral content. If the post disappears, your citation becomes unverifiable.
